January 18, 2012 – Houghton MI: An affiliate of The Veridea Group of Marquette has acquired the Holiday Inn Express of Houghton. Houghton Hospitality, LLC, took ownership of the 61 room property on January 12th for an undisclosed price. The property had been operated under a receivership trustee over the past two years, following a financial default by its previous owners.

Veridea intends to continue to operate the hotel under the Holiday Inn Express flag, and has retained all management and employees. The new owners intend to invest over $1 million in renovations and improvements to the property over the next year. Renovations will include a new breakfast and meeting lounge, and a complete remodeling of all guest rooms, including new beds, mattresses, flat screen televisions, cabinets, wall finishes, flooring, and bathroom tubs.

“We are honored and excited to add this property to our hotel group,” stated Robert Mahaney, Veridea’s President. “The Holiday Inn Express has posted impressive results over the past several years, due largely to the steadfast efforts and commitment to guest service of the hotel’s associates. Our goal is to provide this strong team with a fully renovated property and the support needed to again make it one of the best in the Holiday Inn system.”

Veridea Group is a real estate development and hotel management company based in Marquette Michigan. It has developed over 40 projects totaling over $75 million in value primarily in the Upper Peninsula. In addition to the Houghton Holiday Inn Express, it manages the Country Inn & Suites by Carlson of Marquette, a property recognized in 2009 as Carlson’s Global Hotel of the Year.

MARQUETTE – A local real estate development company announced a new retail center in Marquette Township on Monday.

Members of the Veridea Group LLC broke ground on the West Towne Center, a 12-storefront, $2-million development on two acres located along Wright Street, just west of Super One Foods.

According to Veridea officials, construction of the 14,400-square foot building will begin soon and tenants will begin to move in around November or December.

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — It’s a project that’s been in the works for nearly three years, and Monday morning it all became official.

Veridea Group members broke ground on their West Towne Center, a development that’ll bring twelve new storefronts to a highly commercialized area of Marquette Township.

“It gives individuals from out of the area more reason to come here and spend their money, and that’s always a good thing,” says Marquette Township Manager Randy Girard.

ESCANABA — At this point, the restaurant business in general isn’t doing so well. According to a report released in the Los Angles Times this week, nationwide there are about 9,000 fewer restaurants in the U.S. than there were last year.

Most of those that closed were actually independent restaurants, but experts say those numbers in general suggest that right now we’re not likely to see many more chain restaurants in the area.
